President Obama Declares March American Red Cross Month 03/02/2009

March 2009 is American Red Cross Month, President Barack Obama announced in a presidential proclamation. Each year, the president proclaims March “Red Cross Month”, a time when the organization promotes its services.

Led by volunteers, the humanitarian organization counsels, feeds and shelters victims of disaster; the American Red Cross responds to more than 70,000 disasters each year. It also helps people prevent, prepare and respond to emergencies by teaching health and safety skills. It also supports military members and their families and provides half the nation’s blood supply, according to the national American Red Cross  Web site.

“The Red Cross has continued to serve those suffering from large- and small-scale disasters. The organization is best known for its work helping communities deal with major disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and wildfires,” the proclamation reads in part. “These large-scale disasters represent a major part of the work of the American Red Cross. Just as important are the tens of thousands of small-scale disasters that occur every day in communities nationwide, and the volunteers who respond to them. These efforts include supporting our military and their families, collecting and distributing blood, helping the needy, delivering health and safety education, and providing aid abroad.”

National Red Cross President To Visit Nashville 02/17/2009

National American Red Cross President/CEO Gail McGovern  will visit the Nashville Area Chapter  next week.

She has served as leader of the humanitarian organization since April 2008. In addition to employees, McGovern will meet volunteers in Middle Tennessee on Tuesday.

Her visit comes days after the chapter’s disaster volunteer fair and within a few weeks after Tim Ryerson assumed leadership of the chapter. The Nashville Area Red Cross oversees 36 counties and six community chapters in Middle Tennessee.

The new chief executive officer formerly served as CEO of the Illinois Capital Area Chapter in Springfield. He oversees 18 full and part-time employees and manages a nearly $3 million budget, according to a press release posted on the chapter’s Web site. He succeeded Colleen Zakrewsky, who was promoted to vice president of individual giving to the national American Red Cross in Washington, D.C.

Raising Money For Disaster Relief 12/31/2008

Volunteers and staff for the Nashville Area Red Cross were out in Green Hills and Belle Meade and the Nashville International Airport collecting donations for the organization’s disaster relief fund. All 750 Red Cross chapters across the country participated in the National Day of Giving on Dec. 13 because the fund is dangerously low.

It was depleted due to the very active disaster season with wildfires, Midwest floods, Hurricanes Ike and Gustav and tornadoes in Tennessee.

Any time there is a national disaster, disaster relief comes from this fund. Since 2004, Tennesseans have raised $12 million for this fund, but the Disaster Relief Fund has distributed $19 million in Tennessee during the same time period.
